The ARTIST Lab published the third research article on Cement and Concrete Research entitled The decomposition and quantification of carbonates in cementitious materials by thermogravimetric analysis and mass spectrometry. Our second-year PhD student, Ruoxi Yang, led the experimental study. Congratulations! Ruoxi is in her third semester of PhD study.
Carbon mineralization is a scalable technology for carbon storage. Quantifying carbon storage is important for carbon accounting and technology development. Understanding the chemistry of carbonate-containing cementitious materials requires rigorous phase identification and carbon quantification. This paper integrates thermogravimetric analysis and mass spectrometry to identify and quantify various carbonates in cementitious materials. The influences of particle size, sample weight, heating rate, and other factors on the decompositions of the phases are systematically evaluated. The influences of salts and inert phases on the thermal signature are also analyzed.
Thanks to the University of Michigan, this paper is open-access.
